30th Annual Summer Farmers Market Season Kicks Off

Starting this Saturday, ACT's weekend market moves outdoors and will be held weekly from 9 AM to 12 PM at 25 Enterprise Drive in Middletown through October 26, 2024. New this season, the market welcomes local favorites: the Yagi food truck and Grafik Coffee. The market’s other offerings include fresh vegetables and flowers, local meats and fish, farm-fresh eggs, artisanal wares, prepared foods, family activities, and much more. In addition, several local companies, including Indie Cycle, B Free Animal Sanctuary, Newport Wine Cellar & Gourmet, and B’ladies Knife Sharpening, will offer products and programming throughout the season.

Welcoming Our New Executive Director, Rose Jones!

Aquidneck Community Table (ACT), a leading voice and actor in Newport County on food-systems work, today announced the selection of Rose Jones as its new executive director. With over a decade of experience in State government, Jones is widely regarded for her leadership on statewide food-access planning prior to and during the Aquidneck Island gas outage in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020/21.

As executive director, Jones will play a critical role in advancing ACT’s work to build a resilient and equitable food system on Aquidneck Island. Her prior experience in shaping Rhode Island’s first statewide food strategy and leading complex organizations and initiatives, positions her well to chart the course ahead for ACT.

 Jones succeeds Bevan Linsley, founding executive director for ACT, who will continue to lead key development efforts for the organization.

NewportFILM will host a screening of Farming While Black at the Roger Williams Botanical Center on Thursday, February 29th. This documentary examines the historical plight of Black farmers in the US and the rising generation reclaiming their rightful ownership to land and reconnecting with their ancestral roots.

NewportFILM will host Food, Inc. 2 at the Jane Pickens Theatre on Thursday, March 28th. In this sequel to the 2008 Oscar®-nominated and Emmy®-award winning documentary, Food, Inc., the film follows innovative farmers, future-thinking food producers, workers’ rights activists and prominent legislators who are inspiring change to build a healthier, more sustainable future.

Aquidneck Island Oyster Company, a customer favorite from our summer markets, will be attending several winter market dates. Also, expect specialty empanadas, traditional curries, and hand-woven goods. Need a kitchen knife sharpened? The B'ladies Knife Sharpening Service will be at the market on February 2nd.

As a reminder, our Aquidneck Growers Market at Stoneacre Garden is open every Saturday from 9 AM to 12 PM. Free parking is available at meters along Thames Street, in the Mary Street parking lot, just a block away, and the nearby Gateway Visitor Center on America’s Cup. The market will be closed on March 16th.

Catch us every Saturday morning from 9AM to noon at Stoneacre Garden, 151 Swinburne Row in Newport, and begin your weekend with a sweet treat from Buns Bakery, Dee's Little Sweets or Lucy's Kitchen. Pick a seafood for dinner from The Local Catch, or responsibly, regeneratively sourced meats from Aquidneck Farms and Pat's PasturedRoots Family Farm and RI Mushroom Co. have the ingredients for main dishes and so many sides. And, if you are looking for recipe inspiration, check out the RI Mushroom Co. website and Edible Rhody magazine.

The B'ladies Professional Knife Sharpening will be back at the market on February 11th to sharpen household knives, scissors, and pinking shears in addition to most loppers and Felco style pruners.
